Ningenzen is an organization established to help office workers, homemakers, students, and others cultivate their character through authentic zazen (seated meditation) practice while leading their daily lives. We have over 30 branches, Zen groups, and zazen sessions across the country. Why not join us for a session at a location that’s convenient for you?

 Three Characteristics of Human Zen

There are 31 dojos nationwide

As our sense of self develops, we find ourselves tormented by various emotions, including concerns about life and death. In Zen, a practice has long been established to address this: through zazen (seated meditation), practitioners enter a state of samadhi to attain a peaceful and liberated mind.

Although zazen can be practiced alone at home, it is difficult to maintain the practice on your own. At Ningen Zen, we hold a variety of zazen sessions at local dojos throughout the country. By sitting with fellow practitioners and receiving guidance from experienced practitioners, you can deepen your practice and enhance your personal growth.

An Approach to Authentic Zen Meditation Practice

Zen was introduced from China and has long been preserved by ordained monks within monasteries. However, Human Zen offers a path through which one can practice the same spiritual disciplines as ordained monks without taking monastic vows.
Human Zen traces its origins to the revival of the Ryobo Association by Master Shaku Sōkatsu of Ryobo-an, who followed the tradition of Engaku-ji.

The Zen tradition of the Rinzai school has been passed down through the generations, allowing working adults to engage in authentic zazen practice.

Opportunities for authentic zazen practice are provided through training events such as sesshin and sanzen, which are held three to four times a year at each dojo. By enrolling or joining, you can practice zazen correctly under a master of the authentic lineage. This allows you to discover your true self.

*A teacher of the correct lineage refers to a teacher who has received the teachings of Bodhidharma correctly, passed down face-to-face from teacher to teacher, and who currently embodies those teachings.

The Expansion of the Gassho Movement

Once we discover our true selves through authentic zazen practice, we will put the power we have gained into practice first at home, then at work, and finally in our local communities. With the motto “Righteously, Joyfully, and Harmoniously,” we hope to launch a movement where we join our palms together to take even a single step closer to building a world of bliss. While the practice is profound and difficult to master, we hope to contribute to building a better society by promoting acts of self-benefit and benefit to others through the “Joining Palms” movement.

Gassho refers to the act of bringing both palms together in front of the chest. The fundamental spirit of gassho is to join our palms in reverence for the dignity of Buddha-nature, whether in an enemy or a stone by the roadside. The Human Zen Gassho Movement seeks to build a livable, joyful world while savoring our own lives, guided by the principles of “Righteously, Joyfully, and Harmoniously.”

Furthermore, as part of this movement, traditional cultural activities are also carried out by volunteers.
